Lawn: all you need to know about maintaining your lawn!

To have a beautiful lawn, there is no secret: it must be maintained throughout the year! Find out how to use it to give your lawn all the care it needs.

Correct lawn defects

At the end of winter and before the first spring mowing, remember to correct the small flaws in your lawn.

Does water collect in certain places during rainy episodes? This is proof that the earth can no longer drain properly. To remedy this, fill these puddles with sand or fine gravel.

Are some areas covered with moss? Do not hesitate to treat them with lime.

The grass has given way to empty areas? Use a relining turf in early spring to fill them. You will understand, to each problematic its solution!

Mow in the rules of the art

Mowing is the first step in maintaining your lawn. In spring, the growth will restart, and give regular mowing an essential character.

Make a habit of mowing only when the grass is dry, and do not mow until the shoots are at least 7 cm long. When they are high enough, mow to a third of the height.

Also take advantage of the end of winter to sharpen the blades of your mower, and if necessary, drain it.

Eliminate felting on the surface

Over time, the accumulation of dead leaves, roots and moss forms a thin layer on the soil surface. Little by little, this layer called felting or felt, suffocates the earth and deprives it of the water, air and light that are so precious to it… Result, your lawn eventually turns yellow (or worse, degrades) .

To prevent this from happening, scarify the lawn once a year. Behind this uninviting appellation hides a very important action which will allow you to unfelt your lawn - remove the felting - and let the soil breathe.

For this, there are manual or motorized scarifiers. What they have in common is that they have teeth that will lacerate the felting. A few days before scarifying, remember to mow your lawn fairly rough, then collect the cut grass and water.

Give it a compost

If you have just scarified your lawn, this is not the time to lose your hand: take advantage of the fact that the felting has just been removed from the soil surface to enrich the soil by providing it with shovels of potting soil.

The nutrients contained in the soil will thus penetrate the soil to enrich it. If you want to modify its structure, consider using a suitable potting soil - if you want it to decrease in acidity, a potting soil based on pine will not necessarily do the trick.

To make it easier to penetrate, you can use a rake, obviously with a light hand so as not to damage the lawn.

If you are using fertilizer, apply it once a year, at the time recommended by the manufacturer. Also note that cut grass is an excellent natural fertilizer: do not hesitate to use the mulching function of your mower!

Weed the lawn

The gardener's bane, weeds are often invasive. To prevent them from colonizing your lawn, the ideal is to weed in the spring, in order to uproot them before they grow. You can also remove those that remain in the fall after their growth is complete, and pass them once in a while during the winter.

To do this, generously water your lawn and equip yourself with an asparagus gouge or a weeding knife ... but above all with a good dose of elbow grease! Sometimes you will need to rotate the blade around the root and pull hard to make sure you don't leave it in the ground.

You can also use a weedkiller, liquid spray or solid to spread by hand, depending on your habits.

Water when possible

In summer, the lawn can suffer from heat and drought. To help him get through this difficult period, you can space the mowing as far as possible, keep a fairly high mowing height, and as far as possible ... Water the re-grassed areas to help the grass grow! The best, except period of drought, is to water them between once and twice a week.

If you use fertilizer, do not abuse it during the summer: you risk burning the most fragile blades of grass!

Pick up what's lying around

The lawn is like the inside of a house: when you leave things lying around at home, you quickly find yourself having to clean up - much more painful, by the way.

Collect dead debris throughout the winter to let the earth breathe, and get rid of weeds as soon as they appear. Your task will be much easier in the spring!
